1. Strasbourg
Stay
About the destination: Poised right on the German border, sophisticated Strasbourg has been shuffled back and forth between Germany and France for centuries. Today it is a symbol of reconciliation between nations. In 1955 it was chosen the seat of the European Parliament. Cosmopolitan Strasbourg nonetheless remains thoroughly Alsatian in appearance, with its half-timbered houses, covered bridges and flower-lined canals. Start a tour at the mesmerising Gothic cathedral, whose light, open spire rises above the historic core of the city. While you wait for the delightful play of the horloge astronomique, astrological clock, be sure to see the Pilier des Anges, one of the high points of Gothic sculpture. Across from the cathedral are the elegant 18th Château des Rohan, housing a porcelain, archaeology, and fine arts museum and the Maison de l’Oeuvre Notre-Dame, a huge collection of medieval and Renaissance art. For folklore, visit the Musée Alsacien. During the summer, there are folklore and music programs, and a walk along the quays of La Petite France, the old quarter, is best on a warm summer night. Get a taste of the delicious Alsatian cuisine in one of the many riverside restaurants.

Next, venture to the old town of Verbania, where you'll find the enchanting Palazzo Borromeo on the picturesque Isola Bella, one of the stunning Borromean Islands. This 17th-century palace is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture and art. Its elaborate gardens, adorned with white peacocks and stone statues, offer breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains. A boat trip to the island is not only a journey through the grandeur of Italian nobility but also a chance to relish the tranquil beauty of Lake Maggiore. Stay
About the destination: The Cinque Terre (Italian pronunciation: [ˈtʃiŋkwe ˈtɛrre]; Ligurian: Çinque Tære, meaning "Five Lands") is a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera. It is in the Liguria region of Italy, to the west of the city of La Spezia, and comprises five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over the centuries, people have carefully built terraces on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the sea. Part of its charm is the lack of visible corporate development. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages, and cars cannot reach them from the outside. The Cinque Terre area is a very popular tourist destination. The villages of the Cinque Terre were severely affected by torrential rains which caused floods and mudslides on October 25, 2011. Nine people were confirmed killed by the floods, and damage to the villages, particularly Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, was extensive

About the destination: Karlsruhe is a city on the Rhine in Baden-Württemberg in Germany. It is in the north of the Black Forest, close to the French border. The city was founded in 1715 by margrave Karl Wilhelm von Baden. The city was laid out on the drawing board. It consists of a central circle, containing the castle, and streets running towards the castle as radial "spokes". This pattern is still visible today. Due to the fan-like layout, Karlsruhe is known as the "fan city" The most important sites to see in Karlsruhe are: • Palace: The palace was rebuilt after World War II, and now hosts the Badisches Landesmuseum, a museum dedicated to historical exhibitions and local interest. • There are several artificial lakes in the villages around, for example Epplesee in Rheinstetten and Weingarten and Untergrombach. • The Pyramid, on the Marktplatz: the emblem of the city. Marks the place where Karl Wilhelm was buried. • Bauhaus-Siedlung Dammerstock. The Dammerstock suburb has a residential area in the Bauhaus style, was planned by renowned architect Walter Gropius. • Naturkunde Museum: close to Marktplatz, ideal to go with children.

8. Utrecht
Stop
About the destination: Utrecht is both the geographical centre of Holland, and one of its major university towns as well as one of one of the Netherlands' oldest cities, with a compact medieval centre set out around canals unique to the Netherlands. National demonstrations often start here, book and print shops dot tiny streets throughout the old tonw, and in summer, people sit near the Oude Gracht, the old canal. The Old Town of Utrecht really is a pleasant place to wander with its varying architecture and its uniquely-structured canals. As to be expected there are some magnificent churches, the most interesting being the Dom Tower and the remains of its church. In the 17th century, a hurricane separated the Domtoren, an imposing tower, from its cathedral. Don’t let the 465 steps to the tower put you off, the view is splendid. The cathedral’s chapel and enormous clocks are fascinating. Across the street is the Kloostergang, part of the cathedral’s Gothic cloister, a perfect place to sit down and relax, and listen to a Saturday morning carillon concert. The city has a fine number of museums, most of them situated in the Museum Quarter at 10 minutes walking distance from Central Station. Utrecht is known as a student city with a large population of single young people. This results in a booming nightlife with many places to have a quick meal, some drinks or a dance.
